Subtract every occupied side
Start with wall-to-wall hall width. Subtract cabinet depth once for one occupied side, or twice for equal-depth storage on both sides. In an illustrative 140 cm hall, one 32 cm cabinet leaves 108 cm; two leave 76 cm. These are arithmetic results, not a judgement that either layout meets a building or accessibility standard.
Give the door its own check
A door moves through an arc, not a straight line. A cabinet near the hinge can meet the open door even if the hall still looks wide enough. Measure the door leaf width, which corner the hinge occupies and how far the storage starts from the door wall. Check handles, skirting, trim and the actual opening with the door in place.
Choose a target for your household
Your clear-width target should reflect how people really enter and leave, including mobility equipment, carrying bags and helping another person. Consult applicable local building and accessibility requirements. The tool accepts a planning target; it does not set a legal minimum or certify an escape route.
A shallower cabinet may beat a bigger hall
Before moving everything, compare storage on one side, a shallower unit or moving it farther away from the swing. Doors and drawers on the cabinet need room too. Include them in your real check even though the simplified diagram uses the closed cabinet footprint. Keep the route out unobstructed.
Where feng shui fits
A clear entrance is a common feng shui preference. The practical reason here is straightforward: space to arrive, put things down and leave without obstacles.
